A Turkish Coffee Date

A girlfriend and I met for an impromptu coffee in the city.

In need of a pick-me-up, we sprang at the chance to try our first sips of Turkish coffee with lunch. Warned that Turkish coffee would give us a good jolt we decided to split the first round. Quickly delighted by the tiny, patina copper pot and ceramic teacups we ordered a second round.

The experience was beautiful! The coffee strong but similar to Italian espresso.

Since there were several components in Turkish coffee, the brew came with laminated instructions. Dip the sugar cube into coffee. Suck the saturated granules to allow the sweetness to cut the bitter coffee. Sip the coffee itself. Nibble the Turkish candy to finish.

Well, I dipped my sugar cube too long. The entire thing dissolved between my fingertips and fell— kurplunk!— into my cup. I swirled the cube with the dainty spoon until it dissolved and it was still just as lovely anyway. Moving forward I abandon the instructions and just enjoyed the process. However, my friend and I both saved our Turkish delights as an after meal treat. The perfect chaser to my creamy and spicy Turkish eggs which I will be attempting to recreate at home very soon!
