Cherishing the Season & Elongating the Harvest
The garden is full of wonder and exploration. Like the children I am learning new ways to enjoy our outdoor space that have less to do with weeding and watering. Yet everything to do with delight and savoring.
The garden is quickly becoming my favorite morning spot. This summer it’s been a welcomed replacement of my desk with its bright morning sun. In the morning the garden entices me with its cool shade and allure of awaiting possibilities. Upon entering each morning, I find myself eager to unearth the plants that have gained height or have begun to bud after a thundershower.
This morning, I took out a bit of coffee, the unwanted remains of my daughters sweet potato crumb muffin, and watercolors. The blush salmon colored climbing roses are trying to do their best to make it to the top of the trellis before autumn and it must be documented.
I am not a great artist but it gives me great joy to try to capture beauty all around me with words, pencil, or camera.
The act of observation in this way is very different than simply admiring with my eyes. When I try to draw or paint what I see, I am looking at the world around me more finely tuned to the smallest of details. In this creative space a new appreciation and awe grows for the things I see.
Art is a great practice for elongating the harvest. Along with collecting bits and twigs from the garden to press and dry for keepsakes, gifts and wrappings. Making fragrant bouquets of herbs for my vanity or desk.
