A Summer Morning at the Farmer’s Market

Did you know you can make ricotta cheese at home on the stove?

More on that another time but ricotta was just the breakfast— alongside jam, honey and toast— to fuel our trip into the city to visit the local farm stands and artists. Reggea music filled the park and we were all to fortunate to discover smack in the center of the hubbub a fountain splash pad and playground.

Chicken Milanese is on the menu for supper but a stroll through the farmer’s market brought freshness to the table. We procured squashes, eggplant, and the most gorgeous heirloom tomatoes.

I chat with the producers of a mushroom treehouse operation about the golden oyster mushrooms they sold. I’ve never seen anything like them and they smell like the sea. I’m thrilled to mess with them for a vegetarian Parent Night dish in a few days.

Sweet orange cherry tomatoes lasted all of two seconds before devoured straight from the container. We popped them in our mouths like candy. Someone, I think my husband, had the wherewithal to at least sit some cheese out to accompany them even though, they didn’t need it.

We were happy family friends could me with us during cool down at the water park. The children enjoyed the music, conversation and cold treats like ice cream and popsicles from local proveyors. On such a hot morning, it was hard to avoid some grumbling, fussing and requests to return home. I suppose it is to be expected.

For the mot part we all had a memorable time with friends and exploring close to home.
